Compass - Islam In Indonesia

In this two-part special Geraldine Doogue travels to our near neighbour, the world's most populous Muslim country, where a battle is underway for the hearts and minds of believers.

Part 1 The Progressives This episode focuses on progressive Muslim leaders as they try to counter extremism, fundamentalism and a general swing to the right among Muslims, in a bid to promote an open, tolerant and pluralist version of their faith.

Part 2 The Conservatives In the second part of this Compass series Geraldine Doogue discovers the focus of conservative power is the Majelis Ulama Indonesia (MUI), the Council of Indonesian Islamic Scholars which has recently issued a fatwa against progressive thinking, innovation and pluralism. She explores what this means for Australia and for the future of Indonesia.
