Compass - Education Special

Schools have become a sort of summary of different Australian values and aspirations. Parents today have a choice of public and private, faith-based and secular - which will be best for their children?
A Muslim Education
Rowdy opposition to a proposed new Muslim school in Sydney's south-west has again exposed a deep-seated fear of Islam and what this faith stands for in the modern world. Around Australia there are about 30 Muslim schools and more are planned. What goes on in an Islamic school? Who are the students and teachers? How do their curricula differ from other private and state schools? How much focus is there on religious instruction? Compass explores the stories of two Muslim schools to find out.
More Than the 3 Rs
Compass enters the schools debate.... What shapes parents' decisions when choosing a school for their child? What do they look for? How important are matters like values and faith over academic or sporting excellence? Five parents who've grappled with their decisions share their experiences over dinner with Geraldine Doogue. They have chosen different schools – public and private, faith-based and secular. Which will be best for their children?
A Christian Education
Amid all the recent noise about religious schools; their teaching, funding and impact on our social fabric, have we really listened to those who offer a Christian education? In Australia today over a million children attend Christian schools. Many are in the Catholic system, but there are also independent Christian schools. What makes them Christian, and are they all the same? How do Catholic and other Christian schools teach values and religion? How do Christian values inform teaching across the curricula? To find out, Compass visits four independent schools across three states.
