Catalyst - Undersea Vents
Imagine exploring our planet's last great frontier, diving into the inky mysteries of uncharted depths, finding treasures and strange new life forms. That's the thrill for the men and women in search of the dark smoking secrets of the underwater volcano. In an age when true explorers are rare, geologist Dr. Cornel de Ronde is a modern Captain Cook?...His quest? To chart a newly discovered underwater landform known as the submarine arc volcano.
Dr. de Ronde and a team of scientists from the GNS research centre in Wellington, New Zealand, are heading to Brothers Volcano to map the sea floor in unprecedented detail. Their mission: to create an accurate virtual fly over zone of the volcano and film its active smouldering chimneys, the "black smokers".
From the immense sulphurous heat of White Island, to the black smokers of the deep blue, join Dr. Jonica Newby when Catalyst explores uncharted depths – giving an exceptionally rare glimpse of what de Ronde says is "the coolest, sexiest place on earth" - the Pacific Ring of Fire.
