Catalyst - Sperm: the seeds of the next generation
In vitro fertilisation - IVF - has helped many thousands of people realise their dream of having a baby. Remarkably, around 1 in 6 couples have trouble conceiving naturally and increasing numbers are turning to IVF.
When couples are having trouble conceiving, the spotlight tends to fall first on the female's reproductive system. But male infertility is alarmingly high, and is often the source of the problem.
Through IVF we're allowing sperm that couldn't naturally conceive babies to reproduce. With increasing numbers of people now using reproductive technology to start a family, are we defying natural selection and causing an increase in the infertility of future generations?
