Catalyst - Seeing is Believing
We all know the difference between black and white - right? Wrong. Vision Scientist, Dr Bart Anderson has been researching the way we perceive lightness and his discoveries have demanded a re-think of our understanding of vision. Dr Anderson has designed simple, but clever illusions to show how the brain computes lightness, that is, how dark or light we perceive an image.
Every time we look at an image our visual system breaks it down into three elements – illumination, reflectance and transparency. Put simply how light an object appears depends on the context we see it in. If you change the context the image can look completely different. Wrap your grey matter around 'Seeing is Believing'.
