Catalyst - Predicting Alzheimer's
Alzheimer's Disease is the main cause of Dementia and cripples around 200,000 Australians and its only set to get worse due to our ageing population. The race is on to find a way of predicting the onset of the disease which costs the economy between $6 and $7billion a year.
Early diagnosis will not only relieve our health burden, it will allow people to make lifestyle choices which could delay the onset of the disease. Now, a new brain-imaging technique may be able to do just that – predict a diagnosis years before the disease damages the brain. Maryanne Demasi investigates.
