Catalyst - Cheating Sleep
Is it possible to cheat sleep and get away with it?
Scientists believe sleep helps repair nerve cells; allows for the encoding of memories and improves learning. However, with work going global, economies running 24/7 and shift work blurring night and day, we all feel the pressure to sleep less and get away with it. A sleep deprived Jonica Newby travels to the United States to find out what happens when we burn the candle at both ends.
We visit the torture chambers of the University of Pennsylvania Sleep Laboratory and follow some very tired volunteers who've been allowed only 4 hours sleep a night to find out if the weekend sleep-in really does pay back your sleep debt. We also meet the animals that barely sleep at all and ask, "Are you more like a dolphin or a rat?"
