The Australian Ballet production of The Merry Widow
Paris 1905 – a glamourous world of opulent ballrooms, romantic villas and vibrant French cafés, where the women smoulder with sensuality and the men ooze seductive charm. A lively tale of love, money and class plays out against the glitter and opulence of the belle époque. To save his Balkan nation from bankruptcy, Count Danilo, a diplomat of the Pontevedrian ministry, is commissioned to woo the beautiful and recently widowed Hanna Glawari – one of Pontevedro’s wealthiest women. If she marries a foreigner, Pontevedro will be left bankrupt – so the bureaucrats plot to ensure that Hanna marries a suitable national. Little do they know that Danilo and Hanna are old flames! The Merry Widow is a heady mix of romance, comedy and lavish theatricality.
