You Can’t Ask That continues its international trajectory as one of Australia’s hottest factual formats

Global media intelligence consultancy K7 Media released their report ‘Tracking the Giants’ this week, announcing the ‘Top 100 Travelling Unscripted Formats’ for 2020-2021. It’s no surprise that ABC’s You Can’t Ask That is high on the list, and now officially the top factual format to come out of Australia – well ahead of Fremantle’s Take Me Out and Thank God You’re Here.

Australian industry bible Mediaweek covered the news this week in their morning report. “The hottest format to come out of Australia recently is the ABC’s You Can’t Ask That. The format finds a spot in the Top 20 on the K7 chart and is one of only three Australian entries in the Top 100’.

You Can’t Ask That is ABC Commercial’s most successful TV format, with 37 seasons in 9 different languages across 11 international productions.

“With its universal themes and unique ability to explore our differences, You Can’t Ask That has been extremely popular with audiences around the world,” said Jessica Ellis, Head of Content Sales & Distribution at ABC Commercial, “The original Australian version of the show is currently in its sixth season on ABC TV, while international format sales go from strength to strength. The majority of territories where the series has been produced (including Canada, France, Italy, Israel, Poland, Norway and others) have commissioned multiple returning series, and we have current options in an additional 15 territories, including the US, India and Asia. We’re very pleased to see momentum on this fantastic show continue to build in scope and penetration.”

Series 6 of You Can’t Ask That in Australia is currently on ABC TV. All episodes of the new series, as well as the first five seasons, are available to binge on ABC iview.
