Home Movie Footage Stars in Music Video

Footage from our unique home movie archive collection has become a part of music history since it was used in a Bernard Fanning music video called Departures (Blue Toowong Skies) from his newly-released second solo album, Departures. Fanning is best-known as the lead singer and frontman of legendary Australian rock band Powderfinger. The music video features the multi-talented Fanning singing and playing the piano and guitar. It is cleverly interspersed with old home video footage showing happy scenes from a bygone era: of family life and children playing, providing the perfect nostalgic backdrop to the haunting melody. The song speaks of love and loss and is a deeply personal tribute to Fanning's family and his childhood spent growing up in Toowong. "The lyric is talking about the place in Brisbane where I grew up. Toowong, a near city suburb that my Dad also spent his childhood in and ended up being buried in, along with my older brother, who I now happen to be older than." - Bernard Fanning View the clip FiftyFiftyFilms who provided the brief for this project, requested home movie footage from the 1950s to the 1980s, including footage of kids' birthday parties, backyard cricket, family barbecues, kids playing in the pool; with bikes; skateboards; and playing games. The Library Sales team immediately thought of the home video collection which fitted the brief perfectly. We are extremely fortunate to have access to a truly remarkable collection of old home movies donated to the ABC by the Appel and the Bray families.
