BLACK CAVIAR’S AUTHORISED BIOGRAPHY TO BE PUBLISHED

ABC Books/HarperCollins Publishers Australia has acquired the book and e-book rights to publish Gerard Whateley’s authorised biography of Black Caviar, the horse that has seized a place in the imagination of every corner of Australian society.

Black Caviar will be published in Spring 2012. Helen Littleton, Associate Publisher at ABC Books, acquired world rights to Gerard’s story of Black Caviar’s rise to become Australia’s most significant racehorse since Phar Lap, from Jason Bakker at Signature Sport Management.

Combining authoritative journalism and sharp-eyed analysis with emotive commentary, Gerard Whateley has established himself as one of the most trusted and popular sports broadcasters in Australia. Each year he takes listeners to the Melbourne Cup, the AFL Grand Final and most recently the enduring six-hour men’s final at the Australian Open. With a passion for racing instilled as a child, Gerard has written about the sport in various forums from the Herald Sun to The Drum website since the early 90s. He assumed the duties as the ABC’s race caller broadcasting the past four Melbourne Cups. He has called 14 of Black Caviar’s victories.

Black Caviar is the most recognisable sports star in the country. When she races it is front page news. With the perfect record of 21 wins, her place in the history books is already internationally assured. With a devoted army of salmon-and-black spotted fans, leading trainer Peter Moody’s mare is a product of her time. She has her own blog, Facebook page and Twitter account. And with Gerard Whateley’s account of her deeds and effect on racing and society more broadly, she will have her first biography.

Gerard will provide an intimate account of the self-made trainer who emerged from the desolate outback to prepare the greatest sprinter the world has seen. He will take readers into the stable, put them with the luckiest owners who ever bought a horse, bring them inside the broadcast box and put them in the saddle with Luke Nolen. He will take them to the climax of the story at Royal Ascot in June.
