Smart's Labyrinth (Creative Spirits)

Jeffrey Smart is one of Australia's best-known painters. He has been called a hyper-realist with surreal undertones who paints powerful critiques of the alienation of man in the 20th century, and his work is unique in world art. His solitary figures have been interpreted as statements on the dehumanising conformity of modern architecture and social planning, yet Smart claims he likes living in the 20th century and the world has never been more beautiful.
