Quantum - Indelible Evidence
This two part series deals with the use of forensic science in murder investigations.
1. Final Payment
Two people are murdered on a country property. Forensic work by the ballistics expert determines the type of weapon used. A telephone conversation recorded on the Saturday night from the dead people's house confirms police suspicion that they died on Saturday night. Their insurance agent denies insuring the dead man's car, yet everyone in town knows that the dead man deliberately crashed his car. The agent becomes a suspect when police consider this as a motive. If the suspect had pocketed the premium instead of issuing a policy he would have to pay out the $5,000 himself. Evidence leads to the arrest of the insurance man.
2. Voice of Extortion
In 1980, two Woolworths stores were destroyed in Maitland and Warilla. On Christmas Eve an anonymous caller warned of a third bomb in the toy department of the George Street store. The blast ripped through the store, but people were evacuated in time. This led to numerous calls made by the accented extortionist demanding $1 million to be dropped on the bottom of the harbour at Taronga Park Zoo. A diver was apprehended - a man called McHardie. The forensic investigators finally piece the mystery together to find McHardie guilty.
