Journey of Imagination, A
A documentary on the life and art of James Gleeson, Australia's foremost Surrealist painter to mark his 80th year. Surrealism was inaugurated in Paris in 1924, and included such talents as film-maker Luis Bunuel and painter Salvador Dali. Though the outrageous Dali was an early influence, Gleeson developed his own version, based on dreams, memory, free invention and the Australian landscape. Gleeson has practised as painter, poet, draftsman and collagist since the early 1930s. The program traces his career from the Sydney art world of the 1930s to Paris, London and Venice in the 40s, and back to the present.
