When French novelist Emile Zola said "I am here to live out loud", he could have been talking about Robert Hughes. His books alone, 'The Shock of The New', 'The Fatal Shore', 'Culture of Complaint' and 'American Visions', amongst others, have marked him as possibly our greatest public intellectual.
A landmark TV series and the position of TIME magazine's art critic for 30 years, have made his voice more powerful still. Now, with the publication of his memoir, 'Things I Didn't Know', we get to hear the inner voice of a man whose relationship with Australia has become increasingly complex.
