Don’t Stop the Music
Based on a Channel 4/Fresh One format DON'T STOP THE MUSIC is a three part documentary series in which conductor and music education campaigner Guy Sebastian will attempt to get quality music education into every school in Australia and instruments into the hands of kids who need them most.
Countless studies have shown the unique, transformative effects of music in schools, on attitude and attendance, literacy and numeracy, discipline, confidence and teamwork. Yet less than a quarter of government schools in Australia meet the basic standard identified by a National Review in 2005 that highlighted an urgent, unmet need for music education. Ten years later, little has changed. The inequality of access to music education is marked with 80 per cent of kids in government schools missing out.
The series will be shot over nine months and will follow a ground-breaking music teacher mentoring program and a brand new instrumental music program at a school in an area of severe socio-economic disadvantage in metropolitan Perth. At the heart of the series is Challis Community Primary School, a school facing multiple challenges, with limited resources and children from severely disadvantaged backgrounds. Common problems faced by families enrolled at the school include high unemployment and intergenerational reliance on Centrelink, drug and alcohol addiction, domestic violence and intergenerational illiteracy. The series will follow the transformation of three to five key characters at home and at school as they face the challenges of everyday life and discover the power of music.
This program is released for non theatrical use within educational, government and business organisations. Additional payments under a Screenrights licence are not required. Please contact us for Exhibition or Streaming Licences.
